March 27, 2019 – Charlotte, NC – Hanger Clinic recently sponsored a First Swim in Charlotte, NC at the Harris YMCA. This was the third year consecutively that Hanger Clinic has hostaed this event. Classroom education for area therapists and swim coaches was offered with continuing education credits in the morning, by Emma Durante, OTR/L and the group included several DPT students from Elon University in Burltington, NC.
The afternoon session saw 14 participants join us for the First Swim and included individuals with amputations as well as spinal cord injuries. Representatives from Hanger Clinic included Kate Hausmann, CO and Mark Elgart, CPO as well as Almeta Mallory from the Charlotte VA and Twila Adams from the Charlotte PVA. As a follow up to this program and in conjunction with the Harris YMCA, OPAF will begin hosting First Friday Swims at the Harris pool on Friday, May 3 and each first Friday continuing. These events are made possible through grant funding from US Masters Swim and will focus on Adult Learn to Swim skills and drills.
